As many know, the sunflower is the state flower of Kansas.

One thing I like about our meadow, is the abundance of wild flowers that can be found in the spring through fall months. Each season brings something new, and some years the bloom is better than others. It all comes down to the weather.

I have a seriously major project in that I need to get a bunch of flowers identified, including some on these pages. I keep thinking one of these years I'll collect samples, and take pictures of as many that I possibly can, keep a log, and try to get some ballpark idea of how many kinds there are around here. Many of the wildflowers can be used for medicinal purposes, but unless you really know what you're doing, don't even think of trying it.

Gadzooks, I can remember when I was a kid I'd be runnin all over this hilltop, traipsin through the fields and pastures, and doing it barefoot. My feet are not that tough anymore! Not only do we have a lot of flowers, but dadgum it's rocky around here too. And then you've got stuff like cactus!

Good ole prickly pear!

It does have mighty pretty blooms, but man do those spines smart!

So ok, I'm gonna share some of the flower pictures I have, and will identify those that I know. If I could only remember what I've learned and forgot, that would help! I have got to invest in some more field guides, and not just for flowers! Now I said "some" of the pictures, cause I do have a lot of them! And it's going to be hard to choose which ones to use!

Now here's one I'm not sure about. But they are tiny, and very pretty.

Now this is a cool one! It's a Catclaw Sensitive Briar.
When you touch it's leaves, or if the wind is blowing hard, they close up.

Now here's one the ole timers call a wild verbena. But it is a Rose Vervain.
And there's more of the Catclaw Sensitive Briar nestled with it.
You can see that when this picture was taken, we were in a drought situation.
